Industry Compliance
The Telecommunications industry is highly regulated in Australia. Vanilla Telecom is an active member in the Telecommunications regulatory and compliance groups. We have strong ethics and a proven history and reputation. An overview of some of the industry groups are listed below:

ACCC
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) promotes competition and fair trade in the market place to benefit consumers, businesses and the community.

The ACCC is responsible for the economic regulation of the communications sector. It is also responsible for administering provisions in legislation including:

  • Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA)
  • Telecommunications Act 1997
  • Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999

ACMA
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) licenses Australia’s telecommunications carriers and regulates fixed line and mobile telecommunications. Some of ACMA’s responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the development of codes of practice for the industry and monitoring compliance
  • Monitoring the performance of carriage service providers
  • Setting and enforcing industry technical standards, and monitoring industry performance
  • Numbering
  • Advising consumers on their rights and safeguards
  • Managing delivery of services to people with a communication impairment

MNP
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) began in Australia in September 2001. The Mobile Number Portability Industry Code was developed to specify the procedural arrangements required to port a Mobile Service Number between Carriage Service Providers, where there is a change in Mobile Carrier Network.

Communications Alliance Ltd
Communications Alliance is the primary telecommunications industry body in Australia. Through a range of successful programs, events and initiatives, Communications Alliance has a leadership role in facilitating industry-based solutions to sectoral issues and is taking steps to bring to fruition the broadband and digital era, including leading the industry’s involvement in the National Broadband Network implementation.

The Communications Alliance Telecommunications Consumer Protections (TCP) Industry Code is recommended reading for any Telecommunications service provider or MVNO.

Law Enforcement
Vanilla Telecom is compliant with requests from law enforcement agencies to access customer information or lawfully intercept or access telecommunications in specified circumstances pursuant to an interception warrant or a stored communications warrant issued under the TIA Act.

IPND
The Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) is an industry-wide database containing all listed and unlisted public telephone numbers and associated information. It is a critical source of information for emergency and law enforcement purposes. MVNOs must provide customer information to IPND according to the industry code and guidelines.

TIO
The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) is a resolution service for small business and residential customers who have a complaint about their telephone or internet service in Australia.

Established in 1993 and provided for under a Federal Act of Parliament, the TIO is operated by Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Ltd and is independent of industry, the government and consumer organisations.

By law, if you provide or resell telecommunications services to consumers and small businesses you must join the TIO.
